album redesigns
ROLE: research, ideation, print design, illustration
DATE: Fall 2019
Album cover art can influence the way the listener perceives and experiences the music. I was inspired to redesign some of my favorite albums and experiment with their visual style to deliver an alternative vision of their covers. Below you will find 3 albums that I redesigned as a passion project for one of my design classes.
currents: Tame impala
My first album redesign was inspired by one of my favorite albums of all-time: Currents by Tame Impala. This album comprises of retro-feeling psychedelic, yet modern, sounds that inspired me to come up with this visual style for the cover. There are certain elements from the original cover that I drew upon for inspiration while asserting the retro mood in the redesign.
igor: tyler the creator
IGOR is an album I knew I wanted to experiment with in redesigning because I remember being underwhelmed with the reveal of the album cover when it came out. The persona Tyler the Creator came up with for this album, Igor, has a colorful and funky aesthetic that viewers got a glimpse of in other promotional materials for the album. I was inspired by the look of Igor and used it to reinvent the album cover for a brighter, pop-art feel.
Dark side of the moon: pink floyd
This classic album has one of the most recognizable album covers in music history. A diagram of a light prism is synonymous with Dark Side of the Moon. Despite its notoriety, I wanted to add my own twist. Some key original elements are carried through, like the white and rainbow light, but manipulated in a modern way. I added more texture and detail while keeping it simple and preserving that instantly recognizable feel of the original.
